The True Meaning of Poverty in Africa
The true meaning of poverty in Africa has been heavily debated over the past few decades, with dozens of books and thousands of articles on the subject calling it everything from an epiphany to a controversial topic that needs more research before it can be defined. But what exactly is the true meaning of poverty in Africa? As someone who grew up with the concept of poverty at my fingertips, I’ve spent years thinking about what it means to live in poverty and am ready to give you my answer – let’s discuss what it really means to be poor in Africa.
- How Africa’s poverty level can be defined
The level of poverty a country has is determined by how much money it has. The more it has, and how evenly it’s spread among its population, contributes to a lower poverty level. There are many different types of measurements used to determine how well countries are doing economically. Each measurement focuses on different factors like average income or distribution of wealth. It can also be defined by a person’s economic standard and/or ability to provide for themselves without relying on outside aid or help from others. One common way to measure poverty is called absolute poverty. Absolute poverty takes into account basic needs such as food, clothing, housing, and healthcare and determines whether those are being met.
- What are the types of poverty in Africa?
So, what is poverty? We can say it is an economic, social, and cultural condition of a group or individual that limits their choices and opportunities and decreases their well-being. In simple words, we can define poverty as A situation characterized by scarcity or insufficiency of resources required to meet basic needs. It includes a lack of income; poor health care; malnutrition; illiteracy; homelessness; inadequate water supply and sanitation services. In an African context, poverty may be caused by civil war (as in Angola); underdevelopment resulting from colonialism (as in many parts of East Africa) with subsistence agriculture as a major occupation (implying low productivity), or famine resulting from drought.
- Reasons Why There Is So Much Poverty In Africa
The very beginning point is how Africa was colonized. The European countries that came to colonize countries like South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya took huge portions of land for their own use. This didn’t leave a lot of room for growing food or developing infrastructure. If you don’t have enough land to grow food, you can’t grow your economy. When you don’t have money, you can't afford things like running water or sewage systems; without proper sanitation facilities, diseases are more prevalent and people are less likely to live long enough to prosper financially.
- Solutions To End Africa’s Poverty Rate
As one of poorest continent on earth, most people believe that there is nothing they can do to end poverty. However, it's not true. While we must stop expecting governments to solve everything and start taking responsibility ourselves, there are lots of things that can be done. Here are a few ways to help Africans who live under the poverty line
